National Prescribing Service (NPS) Program

GEGPN has been involved in the Quality Use of medicines (QUM) project since 2001. This is a joint initiative with the National Prescribing Service (NPS) Program.

The National Prescribing Service (NPS) is an independent non profit, incorporated organisation providing coordination and leadership for the quality use of medicines and prescribing.

NPS is a member-based organisation providing accurate, balanced, evidence-based information and services to health professionals and the community on Quality Use of Medicines (QUM). To achieve this NPS work in partnership with GPs, pharmacists, specialists, other health professionals, Government, pharmaceutical industry, consumer organisations and the community.

The underlying philosophy of the National Prescribing Service is to make sure prescribers have access to the information and support they need to make good prescribing decisions, ensuring the best and most cost-effective treatment for patients.

This service includes provision of:

• Easy accessible information about changes in our knowledge of therapeutics
• Objective feedback about actual prescribing practice
• Educational activities that integrate therapeutics with broader patient care

GEGPN has been involved in the Quality Use of medicines (QUM) project since 2001 and employs a qualified Pharmacist to deliver on a one-to-one basis with health professionals, delivering the latest information.

Topics being covered for 2010:

• CVD risk-guiding lipid management 
• Opioid therapy in chronic pain: use a planned approach
• Antisychotics, there are three listed so far
